I love holidays, and seasonal greetings. Oh, and obviously I love thematic fall season more than anything else. Of course I'm talking about Halloween. Obviously, as a born &amp; raised Istanbulite, I didn't grow up walking around in my neighborhood, chanting "Trick or treat!" to people but I always loved to stop by the gated community in a back street of my neighborhood and watch the costumes people wear. While I'm still too lazy to find a costume that suits me and contribute to the season, it doesn't keep me away from enjoying things made especially for Halloween.This year, I didn't run to try Starbucks' sour-looking green drink, but Netflix's Cabinet of Curiosities, produced by Guillermo Del Toro excited me a lot. Like, a lot!So what did I do?: Like a responsible editor I am, I immediately began watching the first episode of the series as it came out. I will close-read the episode below, but it'll be through the spoilers, since I didn't like the episode at all. The Cabinet of Curiosities title is damn good, too. Like every person who has taken Art History 101, I am very excited about such references, as I know that museums came out of these personal collections. Cool, cool.Now the first episode, Lot 36&nbsp;is&nbsp;directed by Guillermo Navarro and written by Regina Corrado. It was also disliked by Alara Demirel. Why, you ask?Here comes a spoiler: We have a main character who makes a living by selling what he finds in abandoned warehouses and believes in white supremacy. This analogy is good—it doesn't surprise me when a white person who steals his own locker of interesting from other cultures. Also, he dies in the end, so I am happy for that.Although it is a wonderful criticism that he lost his life to a devil—since it's a symbolism for “spiritualism” attached to cultures identified with “otherness”—, the tension that we did not receive throughout the episode does not end with the excitement of encountering the “monster” at the end. It's not enough spookiness for Halloween!

How would you complete the sentence: “I am a fan of…” What were the universes you were a fan of during your childhood?Hmm, interesting question! I can’t fully remember if I created any “universes” but I definitely treated my life as a musical when I was young. During my youth, Disney Channel was at its best—I think—with shows like High School Musical, Camp Rock, and Hannah Montana.&nbsp;All of those shows revolved around a fun, colorful, “spontaneously breaking into song” kind of universes. Of course, in real life, that doesn’t really exist. We’d need a couple hours of rehearsals to create that! However, as a child, I loved the idea of suddenly breaking into a song and I always wishes that my life could be like that. So I wanted to create a video where I could freely be all of them, and it felt good, haha! So I wanted to make sure to portray that with aesthetically pleasing visuals. We took a lot of inspiration from Wes Anderson’s color palettes and stills.&nbsp;I also wanted to showcase a bit more of a dancing sequel in it, which of course Britney Spears and Madonna did iconically back in the day. I also wanted to tell a story through different types of “Selins”—so I guess I took inspiration from many artists (too many to list) but Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry do this very well, haha! The cake part was by far my favorite scene.

What rituals do you have with your best friend? For example, ours is to go to every horror movie together since we were 12 years old. We burned a cake because we were going to watch the movie together, we didn't realize that the Japanese subtitles weren't coming out because we didn't adjust the screen size, and we tried to make out the events by saying "The DVD must be broken."Let's get straight to the point:&nbsp;Since we started going to the movies again, the movie we were sure to go with was Nope. Hollywood works inherited from the father who died on the items spilled from the clouds at the horse farm continue, and so things are already moving.&nbsp;By the way, Kaluuya's character's name is OJ, O.J. Not like Simpson, but the famous white woman on the movie set questions that, of course. Nope didn't let me in like in&nbsp;Get Out and Us&nbsp;did, and I decided to kick some of the rituals out. I glanced at my best friend as if to reveal the most important secret in the world, "I didn't like it," I said, "Nope to Nope."What keeps me in the second half, apart from inflation: It's the thing with social scientists, you like to refer to systematic problems in close reading. When you understand it, it's good for a person, "Oh, how I solved it,"&nbsp;your brain goes, and your mood lightens up.&nbsp;There are UFOs in Nope—which the system is hiding from us, obscure beings that devour horses and are watched by cameras—well, okay. It's not enough. I couldn't get what was told or, I don't know now. I'm not a movie critic, I'm a writer after all. The narrative form that kept me from coming out was flashbacks. What was the reason for the bloody shoes on the set we visited at the beginning of the movie?For the point where the two stories meet, we turn to the horses on the farm. Jupe, the owner of the amusement park, which is now located near OJ's father's farm, rents out the family's horses for a while.Some more brain food:&nbsp;Jupe was an Asian-American representation of a family drama when he was a kid. Of course, I'm not talking about such a wonderful intersectional, super-healthy representation. Peele's gaze is right on the screen again.As we learned from flashbacks and Hollywood fans, the famous chimpanzee co-star of the show and Jupe doesn't just attack Jupe after killing all the characters. And then I think to myself, “Would I be reading too much if I thought that the chimpanzee was only attacking white people?” These things make me feel like as if I can take a close look at everything!Peele, with his new movie, does not satisfy me as an ordinary viewer. What I'm wondering is, "Hah, what should I think about this place to make my brain happy?" There are those who make me ask, but I can't get enough of it. What kind of a view remained from the government's promises of a New Turkey? What has changed since the glorious first episode of Aşk-ı Memnu? Fantasy must always be reinforced, inculcated. So, did we really kill Bihter?An interesting information about Aşk-ı Memnu: The TV series is the most reported broadcast to RTÜK in Turkey so far. We have been in such a different place since the broadcast of the series that now festivals are canceled and artists are arrested through complaints. I guess I didn't even go to kindergarten or just began when I met the universe of them.
